Geometry and Architecture

One of the wonderful things about studying geometry is that we can see how it connects to the real world through art and architecture.

While the fifth graders were studying geometry, we looked at architecture and art from Spanish and Islamic cultures that use symmetry. We discovered that these pieces are beautiful to the eye because of their design!

Geometry in Islamic Architecture

"We did this project because we were studying symmetry and Islamic Architecture is a perfect example of symmetry. We looked at examples and found the lines of symmetry. See of you can discover the lines of symmetry in our pictures!"

                                        --A Fifth Grader

The yellow sun represents morning. The red sun represents sunset. The blue and light brown lines before, on, and after the yellow sun represents early dawn and the light parts of day. The lines after the red sun represent night.

The bigger orange tiles represent humans and the smaller orange tiles represent the other living creatures. The green is the grass we live on.
