Penn Wood Elementary School Gifted Program Community Service
More than ever it is important to have our students understand the wonderful impact they can have on the quality of life found in our community. Our students at Penn Wood are encouraged to reach out and explore the many options that await discovery. See photos of Penn Wood hikers on the Appalachian Trail as we enjoyed our day of hiking on November 4, 2007. This is one of the best hikes in Pennsylvania! We nurture student passions and interests with enrichment activities designed to promote environmental stewardship. On March 9, 2008 families came to witness the remarkable migratory birds found at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area. Snow geese and tundra swans by the thousands were observed before they head north to nesting sites just below the arctic circle. Students this fall supported research on the East Branch of the Brandywine River. They looked closely at the impact land use has on our aquatic environments. Many students were able to gain a strong sense for the indicators of healthy streams. Our families will be invited this spring to join Gifted Program staff members on stream restoration projects that might become available to us. We will give you details later so that you can plan to join us. We thank you for the opportunity to work with your children, and look forward to working together on projects which benefit our community of life long learners.
