Skyscrapers and LEGO Pneumatics

We start our investigation with a study of skyscrapers.  This powerful symbol of technology is really the by-product of of many other advances in technology. The invention of the elevator, light weight steel, and advanced concrete all contribute to the amazing designs that we associate with urban landscapes.  We viewed clips from a video describing the construction of the Petronis Towers, a 1,483 foot skyscraper which is now the second tallest building.  This building located in Kuala Lumpur and is amazing! We made connections between forces that impact designs and the constant need to problem solve and work to find solutions.  Our simple straw designs force students to deal with lots of structural issues that come up in their design process.  Pictures below reveal designs in progress.  Strong critical thinking help teams to deal with the structural issues that creep into the project.

The early stages of a design: Vision, Imagination, and Planning

Students work through design issues while learning the impact of stress and compression.

These designers are planning how to deal with structural issues that impact their project.

Finished structures were spray painted and hung to be enjoyed as 3D designs.

LEGO Pneumatic Designs

Years ago  LEGO joined forces with several college professors to promote design problems for students.  The pneumatic kits teach fundamental concepts related to chambered air that  is used in lifts, and heavy machinery, and robotics.  Students work through five different designs with students with prior experience using more complex materials.  Our middle school students have had opportunities to be part of a robotic team which competes against other schools.   Click on the following link to learn more about this exciting option for students. Sharing ideas is an important part of the process.
